Statesman, political leader, and historian. Born 1792 in Guanajuato; died 1853 in Mexico City. Elected in 1821 as deputy for Guanajuato to the Cortes de Cádiz. Ministro de Relaciones Interiores e Exteriores (1823-1825). Established the Compañía Unida de Minas and the first foundry in Mexico after independence (1825). Administrator of the estate of the Duque de Terranova y Monteleone. Member of the Poder Ejecutivo after the 1829 Plan de Jalapa, and Ministro de Relaciones (1830-1832) in the government of Anastasio Bustamante. Director of the Junta de Fomento de la Industria (1839- ). President of the Ayuntamiento of Mexico in 1849. Served in the last government of Antonio López de Santa Anna as Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores from April 20, 1853 until his death on June 2, 1853, of pneumonia. Alamán was known for his defense of Mexico´s rights and for his management of the Ministry of Foreign Relations; he was a champion of conservative ideas and an exponent of the monarchist movement. Publications: Disertaciones sobre la Historia de la República Mejicana (1844-1849) and Historia de Méjico desde los primeros movimientos que prepararon su Independencia en el año 1808 hasta la época presente (1849-1852).
The collection contains royal decrees and other documents pertaining to colonial administration and church history in the 17th and 18th centuries, and 19th century correspondence and documents concerning government, political, and military affairs. Included in the latter is a chronology of the campaign of Valladolid y Guadalajara. Also included in the collection is correspondence regarding research and publication of Alamán´s Historia de Méjico, some printed documents issued under his authority as Minister, and his certificate of baptism, diplomas, passports, visas and other certificates. 1598 letter from the Conde de Monterrey is a copy, probably from the 17th century.
